We went down to Virginia's Historic Northern Neck--George Washington and Robert E. Lee were both born there--to the place on the Great Wicomico River my father built in 1967. We go down there as many weekends as we can and just adore the rural and marine tranquility. We take our dog, but our big kitty Gyro must stay at home where he is king. He let me know that he is above me in many ways, notably his ability to jump up onto the top of the kitchen cabinets where he looks down at me and at the dog.
One of the highlights of going to the Northern Neck for me is to hit the saturday morning church rummage sales and yard sales. We went to one that was overwhelmingly huge and in an unusual setting: a boy's summer camp on the river! One of the local churches ran this sale which was held in the many little cabins the city boys use in the summer. I immediatley headed for the crafts "hut" where all sorts of fabrics and notions were for sale. Now, let me tell you there is nothing more frustrating than arriving just in time to see someone else carrying a huge box of buttons. I love buttons and use them all the time in my projects. I just had to look away and find treasures of my own. I did! Here are a few photos. I didn't photograph a group of 12 "knee-hugger" vintage elves as my battery conked out, but I'll show you them later--promise!
I decorate the packages I send out with all sorts of sweet vintage items. Here are a few things I gathered on saturday! The vintage costume jewelry will adorn my one-of-a-kind totes or pin cushions!
This snow maiden in her glittery box will make a nice addition to our Christmas decor this December. The bottle brush tree will join the forest of others on my thin mantel. My BFF Suzy will get the deer, silver angel, and vintage red ornament for one of her AWESOME vintage holiday creations!
I'm always on the lookout for rick rack, piping, and buttons. I snagged a few this weekend as well as some sequin trim (perhaps for a holiday creation, or Fourth of July????) AND a stack of vintage patterns for all sorts of uses or to give away!
I wanted to take a bunch of pictures of the Great Wicomico River, but all I managed to take was this one of our neighbor's dock destroyed in a tropical storm last fall. Then it rained! So, the next time we get down there, I'll get more pictures!
