Route 11 Yard Crawl 2016: Holiday Heat Wave

Hello, My Friends!~~

Once again hubby and I traveled the Route 11 Yard Crawl in Virginia's lovely Shenandoah Valley between Stephen's City and New Market. This year the weather was HOT and HUMID! The weather folk called the heat and humidity "dangerous" but did that stop us? Heck no!

At various yard sale and clusters of flea market vendors, we loaded up my Subaru with lots of vintage goodies for future projects as well as getting great buys in shipping supplies from a couple of folks who clean out storage buildings. Imagine getting excited about bulk buying shipping envelopes and bubble wrap for pennies. Must have been the heat getting to me.

Here is a photo gallery of the loot gathered with lots of sweat equity, sunburn, and gallons of water and lemonade.

There are layers of goodies piled on our dining room table!

 

I found quite a few ceramic Christmas goodies and other treats for future creations. It was a challenge to pick out the what inspires me to create from so many tables over the 45 mile route. A treasure hunt for sure!

Two big boxes of binding tape and rick rack always comes in handy!

As do a big box of vintage glass ornaments. Always useful!

And vintage ribbon...so fun!

Small glass ornaments and other tiny goodies are great for crafting. I was thrilled to find a bunch.

I found the elves at the sweetest church sale along the route. One of the ladies was going to toss them saying they were too old for anyone to want them. I offered to buy them but she said I could have them. I gave her a donation for the church.

At the end of the day I had the worst sweaty hat hair, sunburn, and a car full of treasure! We dined with our good friend Tony who was "crawling" for the first time, and we shared "war stories". Such a great time! I'm already thinking about next year!

Ornament Organization: Why Didn't I Think of This Before?

My studio is located in a corner room in the basement of our house. There is a long hallway to get to the studio and one side of the hallway has shelves where I store most of the vintage materials I use in making Dime Store Chic creations. For years I've kept vintage Christmas ornaments in the original boxes. When I needed a certain color of ornament I would open several boxes in search of the color. Recently the shelves approached something out of "Hoarders". So on Saturday afternoon/evening, I decided to organize the ornaments so finding them would save me time and effort.

It was amazing how many empty ornament boxes went to recycling. I must have hauled five bags upstairs for the recycling bin. Afterwards I was very pleased to see the result:

Boxes on the bottom shelves now store ornaments by color. I pulled these out to show you and after the boxes slid neatly into place. So easy to find what I need now!

Why didn't I do this before? So glad the light bulb finally went on!

Smaller solid color ornaments are stored in an IKEA drawer thingy at the end of the shelves, by color of course. Fancy ornaments are safely stored in original ornament boxes and are on the shelves according to size and style.

The searching for what I need is no longer daunting and I am thrilled to have this finally done. It took me about 5 hours, lots of hauling recycling and trash, and many glasses of cold sparkling water. So very worth it!

Fun With Vintage Ice Cream Cartons

Hello, My Friends!~~

Recently I found some wonderful unused vintage ice cream cartons at a local flea market. After painting some wooden wheels and attaching them to the cute cartons, I mad made a holiday cart to fill with frosty delights!

A jolly snowman looks right at home in the ice cream carton...

 

...And so does a silly cute snow baby!
